Other dog and cat ear problems are caused by bacteria and yeasts infections. Less commonly, allergies may play role in feline inflammation and infection of the ears, and in canine ear inflammation and infections.

What are ear mites?

Ear mites, or Otodectes cynotis, are small, parasitic creatures that normally live in the ears of pets causing severe itching and inflammation. Earmites can also live on the head or body of dogs and cats. They are difficult to see with the naked eye but you can't mistake the dark brown or black grainy substance in your pet's ears that looks similar to coffee grounds.

Earmites in cats and dogs ears, and on their skin can, live for some time. Earmites in dogs and cats are very mobile - allowing easy movement from pet to pet. Earmites are highly contagious and will spread between other pets in the same household and can be passed from the mother to her kittens or puppies. Humans are not normally affected.

Left untreated earmites can severly damage the ear canals and eardrum, cause loss of balance and eventually can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Secondary infections caused by bacteria or yeasts are common in dogs, puppies, cats and kittens that are infected with ear mites.

What is the conventional treatment?

Usual treatment of feline or canine ear infections usually involves antibiotics. In the case of ear mites, ear mite medication and products for flea control are also used. In severe ear mite infestations and multiple pet households, insecticides are sometimes used for treating the house or living environment.

Can Herbal Ear Mite Remedy Help?

As earmites and other ear inner infections are so often treated with antibiotics, chronic and recurrent ear infections are a growing problem and usually occur with decreased immune functioning - a frequent side-effect of antibiotic drugs.

Natural herbal home ear mite remedies can treat and prevent infections of the ear without any of the side-effects of conventional earmite medicine. Treating cat earmites and dog earmites with herbal homoepathic, natural remedies prevents the adverse effects on immune system functioning that antibiotics cause.
